Winning With Emotional People

Welcome to the Industry Insider, we’re delighted that you’re here!

When emotions aren’t great

So many of us come up with a plan, get on track, and start to go where we are going. It’s great! We’re on a mission! But then what takes the wind out of our sails? Dealing with an emotional person.

Why does this occur? Well, we are unbelievably resilient unless we decide that we can’t do it. The moment we decide we can’t do it, the wind will go right out of our sails. And we see this happening nonstop in business and in life.

Do we lack drive, willpower, or force that other people have? No, that’s not what is going on. What happens is that we become literally hopeless on the subject because something tripped a switch in our bran and told us we could not do it And that is emotional people

We have all been this person in our life. Maybe that is you right now or was you at different points in the past. For some people, reason and logic are not a part of their toolkit. Some of us are a bit more reasonable and logical, but we can still get tripped up by emotion.

What I want to do is empower you guys to go for your goals and not become disabled by emotions, whether they are your own or other peoples’.

Dealing with negative emotions in others

If you’re dealing with someone who is in a negative emotional state, such as fear, you have to meet them with the opposite emotion. Confront the emotional state that’s being presented to you with its opposite. So if someone else is in fear and wanting to flee, then you want to fight it with an opposite type of attitude. Get them passionate about something, get them to talk about what they are pissed off about! That can help to erase their fear.

But if someone is angry, then they are stuck in close-mindedness and looking to be right rather than looking to find a solution. You can handle this with calm professionalism. Fighting fire with fire is really never the right option when dealing with any emotion. Stay calm, cool, collected!

As someone’s energy changes, their perception and their strategy for succeeding in life will change. You want to be talking with someone who is operating from reason. Lots of these people are not looking forward to the opportunities that they have. They are actually looking backwards at the negative things that have happened in their past.

So, become an ally in their life. And be genuine! Go into curiosity mode, making sure to validate them even if you don’t actually agree. The words “you’re not wrong” are powerful.

The bottom line? Be professional, have empathy, be curious. In doing so, you can overcome negative emotions in other people and you can encourage them towards something better! It will create benefits all around.
