The Internal Conversation of Success

When you want a better result, where do you look? If you’re like most people, you try to change an external circumstance. If you want to lose weight, you start going to the gym. And if you’re unhappy with your job, you start looking for another. But if you truly want a different outcome, you should be looking internally, not externally.

The things you tell yourself will have the biggest impact on whether or not you succeed. Everyone is engaged in one of two conversations with themselves: the conversation of failure or the conversation of success. What you need to start thinking about is this: how can I frame my internal conversations to position myself for success?

The Lies that Lead to Accepting Mediocrity

Today, the opportunity for financial success in the western world is greater than ever before. People just like you should be taking advantage of these opportunities and making more money than they used to. Yet, there isn’t a higher number of people who are achieving that level of financial success. People tell themselves all kinds of lies. Things like:

  • If the economy were stronger, I’d have more money.
  • If I were more extroverted, I’d be more successful.
  • People like me don’t get loans.
  • My mom and dad weren’t supportive of me. If they’d supported me more, I’d believe I could be successful.

Repeating these kinds of words and phrases to yourself over and over again is going to have a negative impact on you. You’ll never succeed if this is the conversation you’re constantly having with yourself. So instead, you need to replace this pity party conversation with something empowering. Read the books and autobiographies of people who’ve experienced the financial success you desire. Listen to podcasts and the advice of people who are living their dreams. You’ll find out quickly that these people heard the exact same lies from people in their lives. Few people believed in their abilities to succeed and they had all kinds of excuses they could have chosen to listen to. But instead they chose to believe in themselves, and they were rewarded because of it!

Start thinking about what your internal conversation is like. What lies have you been telling yourself? Where did they come from? It’s time to change that conversation in yourself!
